Why it Matters
This would be the country's largest electric bus fleet ever, a real shift for a transport system that's been almost entirely diesel run. But the secretary admitted Bangladesh is still new to EV tech and doesn't have much local expertise yet, so there are still a lot hinges on how well BRTC's first buses actually perform before private operators jump in too.
What We Think
Cutting fossil fuel dependence is a good move, and 1,400 electric buses is no small number. But new buses alone don't fix the transport sector. Routes are still run by rival private syndicates competing for passengers, ticketing stays mostly cash and unregulated, and reckless driving keeps fuelling road accidents, all symptoms of weak oversight and corruption. Unless the government fixes that alongside the EV rollout, this risks becoming shiny new buses running on the same broken system.
